How to Store Raw Shea Butter: Complete Storage Guide

Raw Shea butter is one of nature's most powerful skin moisturisers, but how you store it makes all the difference. Poor storage can make it melt, turn grainy, or lose potency. Here is exactly how to store raw Shea butter so it stays fresh and effective for years.

How Does Raw Shea Butter Arrive?

Our raw, unrefined Shea butter travels all the way from Africa in lightweight pouches. A pouch is the safest choice for the trip: glass risks breaking in transit, and a metal tin can overheat and let the butter melt before it ever reaches you. The pouch is food-grade and completely safe. Once it arrives at your door, decanting a working amount into something with a lid is simply more practical for daily use.

Best Way to Store Raw Shea Butter: Choose the Right Container

The best container is airtight. Glass, clay or metal all work well, because they will not leach anything into the butter and they are easy to clean. Any clean jar you already own does the job. If you would rather have something made for it, we sell empty metal tins and a calabash bowl separately. Keep the rest sealed in the pouch and it stays fresher for longer.

What Is the Ideal Temperature for Storing Shea Butter?

Raw Shea butter stores best at room temperature, around 15 to 24 °C (60 to 75 °F). That keeps it soft enough to scoop without letting it melt. The key rules:

  • Keep it out of direct sunlight
  • Keep it away from heat sources: radiators, stoves, sunny windowsills
  • Never leave it in a hot car, it will melt and set again as a grainy mess
  • Store somewhere cool and dry, ideally 15 to 24 °C (60 to 75 °F)

Should You Keep Shea Butter in the Fridge?

Refrigeration is not necessary, but it is an option if you have a large supply. The downside is that cold makes Shea butter very hard, so you will need to let it warm up before use. If you do refrigerate the bulk of it, keep your everyday portion at room temperature in a small tin for convenience.

Golden Rules for Storing Raw Shea Butter

  • Use a clean spoon to scoop. Fingers introduce bacteria and shorten shelf life.
  • Always keep it covered. Exposure to air degrades quality over time.
  • Avoid heat and sunlight. These are the biggest enemies of unrefined Shea butter.
  • Store between 15 and 24 °C (60 to 75 °F) for the best texture.
  • Refrigerate only if needed. It will harden but will not lose quality.
  • Melt gently when needed for DIY recipes, using a double boiler over low heat. Never let it boil, high temperatures break down the compounds you paid for.

How Long Does Raw Shea Butter Last?

Good news: unrefined Shea butter is a very stable plant fat with a natural shelf life of 2 years or more when stored correctly. It does not go rancid easily. Keep it cool, dry and out of the sun and it will hold its moisturising properties for a long time.

What If Your Shea Butter Melted or Turned Grainy?

Don't panic, both are fixable. If your Shea butter melted and set again with a grainy texture, it is still perfectly usable. Read the step-by-step guide: How to Fix Grainy Shea Butter.
